The Securities Law of Public Finance – Misprint

Thank you Thomas Cooley Law School for bringing this to our attention.  For those of you who have The Securities Law of Public Finance in your library, there is small issue with the instructions in Release #19.  The filing instructions ask you to remove the title page to 6-112.  Actually, you should remove the title page to 6App-96.

The misprinted instructions had you removing most of Chapter 6 but leaving in Chapter 6 Appendix A and B.  Actually, you should remove Chapter 6 Appendix A and B.

Librarians & the Silver Screen

Happy Friday!  What do you plan to do this weekend?  If you have time, rent a movie that features a librarian in a central role.  Check out the Huffington Post’s Librarian’s Save The Day!  11 Great Movies in Which They Star.  “While writers might seem more glamorous, librarians are the quiet heroes of the literary world. Dodd-Frank Whistleblower Rules

The Bernie Madoff scandal shed light on the shortcomings of the SEC’s whistleblower policies.  Some have suggested that their whistleblower policy should more closely mirror the program of the IRS, which many find to be a successful tool in combating tax fraud.  The Dodd-Frank Act has provisions to enhance the SEC’s whistleblower protections.  It also adds incentive for anyone who has something to report by expanding the bounties whistleblowers can receive.  The SEC outlined their new rules and the public can comment on the proposed rules until December 17th.   If you are interested in commenting on these rules you can do so at the SEC’s Public Comment page. 

The Wall Street Journal reported on this yesterday and pointed out that “companies fear the program, created by the Dodd-Frank financial law, will undermine the anonymous hotlines and other processes they have put in place following the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley law to encourage employees to report problems internally.”  To address this, the proposed rules do add provisions for people who initially report wrongdoing internally and contact the SEC within 90 days.

Research = more than just Wikipedia

There was an interesting article in the Chicago Tribune titled: Yes, students, there’s a world beyond Wikipedia.  And while legal librarians might not need to worry about this with their patrons – public and school librarians do need to worry about it.  And of course, many of us are parents and this applies to children’s research habits.  School librarians are doing their best to teach the next generation how to harness the power of the internet.  The article suggests some creative sites that can be used in school projects.
